This week’s featured collection is Kaysha
Kaysha describes themselves as a digital sensei, visionnaire and creator. And these traits come through in their collection of NFTs. Some of the NFTs are original photographs taken by Kaysha. Others are artworks that inspire them. Check out Kaysha’s gallery at lazy.com/kaysha
Today is Earth Day! It’s a day to remind us all to be good stewards of the planet.
In 1970, when Earth Day was started, there were no personal computers, internet, blockchains or NFTs. And as we are a community of NFT collectors, today is a good opportunity to think about the ecological impact of NFTs.
According to some researchers, each time an NFT is transferred on the Ethereum blockchain it “emits almost 150 kilograms of carbon dioxide.” This is the equivalent to “24,895 hours of watching YouTube” or “the power consumption of an average U.S. household over 8.82 days.” But it is not all bad news: NFTs can have a positive ecological impact. Here’s how:
1) Use an ecologically-friendly blockchain
Until Ethereum switches from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake, transactions on its blockchain will continue to emit a tremendous amount of carbon dioxide. One immediate way to decrease your blockchain-related carbon emissions is to collect NFTs on more ecologically-friendly blockchains, like Polygon, that are less energy intensive. Polygon and Algorand have also publicly promised to offset their blockchain’s carbon emissions.
2) Collect NFTs that store carbon offsets
You could potentially offset your carbon emissions by collecting NFTs that store carbon offsets. For example, CO2_COMPOUND is an artwork that has locked up 1 staked $KLIMA token to slowly accumulate carbon offsets. At launch, the artwork owned 4 tons of CO2 offsets. Today it owns 31 tons. 3) Collect NFTs that protect nature
Recently, several NFT projects have emerged that attempt to use NFTs to protect the Earth. For example, the Moss Amazon NFT confers ownership over a hectare of the Amazon Forest. Or consider Coorest’s efforts to tokenize wildlife in order to protect endangered species.
If you want to take it one step further, then consider offsetting your carbon emissions. Happy Earth Day!
