What are CryptoPunks?
If you have been exploring the NFT space like the rest of us, you may have come across pixelated punky looking characters. Who are these CryptoPunks? And why do so many people in the NFT community find them fascinating? Let’s find out.
CryptoPunks, which was released in 2017, is one of the first NFTs ever created. Beyond their aesthetic value, CryptoPunks were also the inspiration for ERC-721, the original standard for all NFTs, and therefore hold a special place in the history of blockchain art.
There are 10,000 CryptoPunks and each one is unique and algorithmically generated. Some traits are extremely rare and highly prized, such as the non-human punks: Alien, Ape and Zombie. Though they were initially offered for free to anybody who claimed them, there is now a red-hot market for the digital collectibles. In fact, the world-famous British auction house, Christie’s, is auctioning off 9 CryptoPunks on May 11th for an estimated $8 Million USD!
Because of their stature, CryptoPunks have also inspired NFT indexes, such as NFTX, that offer the ability to purchase a fraction of a punk. Now everyone can share a CryptoPunk!
